The 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air Fuelie is widely considered to be among the most well-known, most desirable and rare American made collector cars in existence. This car embodies the best of the fifties-era American automotive style. Its lines have become part of American culture. The Bel Air was fitted with lots of chrome and a golden grille set off with a heavy chrome bar that housed the parking lights. The 14-inch tubeless tires gave it a stance one and a half inches lower than previous models. Twin lance-shaped wind-splits down either side of the hood replaced the traditional hood ornament. The rear fins were capped in chrome and highlighted with anodized aluminum trim panels. The fuel-filler door was hidden in the left rear chrome fin trim, and the exhaust was routed through the rear bumper. These small details really set the ’57 Bel Air apart. Rochester’s Ramjet continuous-flow fuel injection advertised 250 horsepower with instant and smooth power. ‘57 was the first year Chevrolet offered a fuel-injected V-8 engine outside of the Corvette line. Chevrolet built 1,499,685 Bel Airs in 1957 but only 47,562 of those were convertibles. Of those only 69 were equipped with fuel injection. The collector that restored this amazing vehicle in the early 2000’s took great care of it. The older restoration still presents very well with a few very minor issues one would expect from a vehicle that has been enjoyed and driven. It could easily be a centerpiece for any collection, a trophy contender at many shows, or a wonderful tour car or Sunday driver. Powered by the 250 horsepower variant of the 283 cubic inch motor, this car came from the factory with onyx black paint which was changed to the current Matador Red color during restoration. The red and silver interior is correct for the car, according to the trim tag. The car features a three-speed column-shifted manual transmission and is equipped with power steering and a padded dash. Other than the paint color, the only other obvious concession to originality is a modern AM/FM radio installed in the uncut factory dash.
